Dhanteras: The Auspicious Start of Diwali Festivities

Dhanteras, celebrated on the thirteenth day of the Krishna Paksha in the month of Kartik, marks the beginning of the Diwali season.

It is a day dedicated to wealth, prosperity, and well-being, where devotees pray for the blessings of Dhanvantari, the god of Ayurveda and health, and Goddess Lakshmi, the deity of wealth. Celebrated with rituals and offerings, Dhanteras signifies the community's deep reverence for good health and financial stability, setting the stage for the joyous days of Diwali ahead

The story behind Dhanteras is one of hope, protection, and divine grace. According to legend, a young prince was destined to die by a snakebite on his sixteenth birthday due to an ill-fated horoscope. His newlywed wife, determined to save her husband, placed heaps of gold and silver coins at their doorstep and lit numerous lamps around their home. She kept her husband awake with stories and songs throughout the night. When Lord Yama, the god of death, arrived disguised as a serpent, he was dazzled by the glittering lights and precious metals, lingering outside until dawn and leaving without causing harm.

This act of devotion and love transformed a tragic destiny into one of life and prosperity. In honor of this tale, families celebrate Dhanteras by bringing home new items of metal, symbolizing the invitation of prosperity, health, and fortune into their homes.

On this auspicious day, devotees prepare their homes with lights and decorations, inviting prosperity with love and devotion. They clean and purify their homes, making them ready to receive the blessings of Dhanteras. Dhanteras, in also referred to as Dhanatrayodashi
