Day 7 - Navratri Pooja - Transform fear into courage and clarity

Each day of Navratri is dedicated to a different manifestation of Goddess Durga, also known as Navadurga, with each form representing her distinct powers. The festival reflects the goddess’s roles as the creator, preserver, and destroyer of evil forces, highlighting her ability to bestow strength, wisdom, and prosperity upon her devotees.

Apart from religious observances, Navratri is celebrated with cultural traditions such as dances, music, and elaborate rituals, where communities come together to honor the goddess with joy and devotion. It is a time of reflection, renewal, and spiritual growth, as devotees seek blessings for health, happiness, and success in life.

On the seventh day of Navratri, (October 9, 2024 - Saptmi Tithi of Shukla Paksha in Ashwina), we worship Goddess Kaalratri, the fiercest and most powerful form of the goddess. She is known as the destroyer of darkness and evil, a force that vanquishes fear and paves the way for purity and wisdom. With her unbound hair, flaming eyes, and sword in hand, she rides on a donkey, representing both the raw and the divine forces of the universe. Her appearance itself is enough to invoke fear into negative energies, darkness and demons to flee and vanish. Kalaratri is also known as Shubankari which means doing auspicious things.

Devi Chandi, created by Maa Parvati, displayed her fierce power in battling demons Chanda and Munda as well as their leaders Shumbh and Nishumbh. In the face of this challenge, she summoned Kaalratri, a formidable version of herself, to assist in eliminating these demons, including Raktabija.

Meera always felt a deep reverence for Goddess Kaalratri. On this seventh day of Navratri, she stood before the altar, reflecting on the goddess’s ability to destroy fear and bring light to even the darkest of times. For Meera, Kaalratri was a reminder that transformation, though fierce, brings clarity and strength.

With her mind set on cleansing the negativity in her life, she began her pooja with offerings that resonated with the fierce grace of the goddess.

Meera started by placing black sesame seeds at the feet of Kaalratri’s idol. Next, she lit a mustard oil diya, the flame burning with the intensity of Kaalratri’s gaze. The diya, flickered brightly, symbolizing the destruction of darkness and the triumph of light. As the flame danced, Meera could feel the energy of the goddess awakening within her, giving her the courage to face her deepest fears.

She then offered jaggery and sweets, a symbol of her gratitude for the goddess’s protection and the sweetness that follows transformation. The jaggery was pure and fresh, aligning with the sacredness of her prayers.

With a mixture of kumkum and black turmeric, Meera placed a tilak on her forehead, invoking the protective energy of Kaalratri. As she chanted her mantras, the sound echoed through her home, vibrating with the power of the goddess.
